Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana) Facts

Used as a substitute to sugar due to its sweetening ability. Contains several sweetening compounds of which stevoside is the most potent. Has a sweetening effect that is 300 times that of table sugar with near zero calories. Documented ceremonial use by Indians in the 1400s. We have found a special use for it when treating patients with certain digestive problems.

How Toxic Is My Body?

We are all affected by exposure to poisons on a daily basis. Our bodies fight a never ending battle to keep a clean and sterile internal environment. Poisons and infections invade, inflame and damage healthy tissue if they are allowed to stay within the body long enough. Following are some facts about certain types of toxins.

In 1989, the agency for Toxic Substance and Disease Registry estimated that 3 to 4 million or 17% of all children in the U.S. had blood levels of lead above the defined toxic level of 15 u.g/dl. Some of the known effects of lead exposure in children are mental retardation, hyperactivity, aggressive behavior and restlessness. Important sources include paint, drinking water, calcium supplements, and imported ceramic dinnerware.

Second hand cigarette smoke is the single most important source of indoor pollution. Studies show an increase in respiratory dysfunction and illness in children exposed to smokers on a regular basis compared to unexposed children. Cigarettes release over 4000 chemical compounds into the air including hydrogen cyanide, ammonia, nicotine and carbon monoxide.

Nitrogen dioxide is a red-brown gas responsible for smog in polluted cities. NO2 is formed from burning fuel. Sources include automobile exhaust, natural gas appliances and kerosene heaters. Indoors, stoves with pilot lights are big offenders!

Benzene is a carcinogen proven to cause leukemia and lymphoma. Benzene is a solvent commonly found in adhesives, cigarette smoke, and paint products. The most frequent exposures occur from unleaded gasoline both by inhalation and absorption through the skin.

Mercury is a hot topic due to its inclusion in silver amalgam dental fillings. Symptoms associated with severe toxicity include red peeling hands and feet, a condition known as acrodynia. A group of dentists was studied and those with greater than 20 ppm of mercury in their bones showed slower nerve conduction time, poor visual motor coordination and increased incidence of carpal tunnel syndrome. Chronic exposure has also been associated with tremors, sleep disorders, and memory impairment. It has been our experience that only a small percentage of individuals with mercury amalgam fillings actually will benefit from removal of their fillings. In our office, we use a product called Chem-X to detoxify the mercury from the tissues of those who are mercury sensitive. This usually is adequate to manage the problem without involving the dentist. Other sources of exposure include contamination from seafood and consumption of raw mercury from broken thermometers by children.

Pesticides are everywhere. There are over 600 varieties registered with the EPA. They are blended together to produce more than 50,000 different products. Pesticides are used on lawns, used as wood preservatives, sprayed on trees and agricultural products, sprayed on people to repel insects, sprayed in houses to deter insect and rodent infestation. They find their way into your water supply when rains wash them from lawns, trees and agricultural settings into groundwater, streams and reservoirs.

PCBs were used up until the 1970's as liquid insulators in compressors, transformers, ballasts for fluorescent light fixtures, and other electrical equipment. Unlike most toxins, PCBs do not break down over time and therefore remain as a hazard in the environment for decades to come. They are stored in the fat tissues of animals and therefore work their way up the food chain to humans. PCBs stunt behavioral and intellectual development in children. High doses in adults produces a serious skin rash known as chloracne.

Optimally, to minimize exposure to these toxins, we could all live in ceramic trailer homes out in the desert, eating only purified and organic foods. But realistically, it's just not possible to avoid these poisons because they surround us in our air, our water, and our food To coexist with this swill of pollution, your best strategy is to avoid blatant exposure and to take measures to detoxify and eliminate those toxins that have infiltrated your bodies. This office uses Systemic Repatterning to identify and remove these toxins. During the course of treatment, lymphatic drainage is utilized to remove poisons accumulated and trapped in your body. Herbs may also be used to assist in the elimination of toxins from your body. It is no longer necessary to let these poisons remain in our bodies to do harm! We recommend that you see us on a once a month basis in order to keep your body tuned up to its optimal level of health.
